Funtimes In Babylon - Father John Misty
Before they put me to work in a government camp
Before they do my face up like a corpse and say: “get up and dance”
Before the beast comes looking for last year’s rent
…I would like to abuse my lungs
Smoke everything in sight, with every girl I’ve ever loved
Ride around the wreckage on a horse, knee-deep in mud
Look out Hollywood, here I come
It’s been a day of revisiting old favourites for me. I started my day by giving my vinyl copy of An Awesome Wave its first spin in about a year and remembering why I fell in love with it in the first place. Then for some reason I went back to this album, Fear Fun, that I haven’t listened to in a long, long time.
It’s funny how many memories, sensations and emotions you attach to certain songs and albums without realising; only upon revisiting them later in life do they resurface.
I think I first listened to this album in the winter and then I remember it feeling warm and insular. It oozed a folksy familiarity, like a big thick jumper. Today though, a long time since my first listen, in the glorious summer sun it feels free, loose and full of space to explore and enjoy.
If you haven’t heard it, I highly recommend it.
